The 6th Exchange Meeting

Event report

The 6th exchange meeting of the Kyoto Startup Support Angel Community was held on Monday, December 12 at Kyoto Tokyu Hotel.

This time we welcomed attendees from a variety of fields, including iPS and Metaverse. A total of 64 people gathered, including Angel Advisors, Angel Investors, previous attendees, as well as those belonging to organizations involved in startup ventures, such as financial institutions in Kyoto and venture capital companies. The meeting was also held online.

Following the 10-minute presentations by presenting companies, a Q&A session was held, where presenters and Angel Advisors actively discussed the following topics:

・How business models can be monetized

・How a company can stand out from its competition (including examples of previous endeavors)

・Further information including the technologies being utilized and the current state of play

・Product launch schedules

In the information exchange meeting after the presentations and Q&A sessions, many attendees, as well as Angel Advisors, visited the booths of the presenting companies enjoying product demonstrations and business discussions. The presenting companies gave us some very meaningful feedback:

・ They appreciated the valuable advice from the Angel Advisors, who are also managers of leading companies.

・They enjoyed discussions that took place between the companies giving presentations, with talk of progressive business opportunities for the future.

・They valued the direct communication with members from venture capital companies.

We will continue promoting the activities of this community so that we can further support the early growth of start-up companies.

Development of Perovskite Solar Cells; ultrathin, lightweight, flexible, and with excellent power generation performance both indoors and outdoors

Being significantly different from the conventional crystalline silicon solar cells typically used for mega-sized solar power generation systems, perovskite solar cells have demonstrated a conversion efficiency of 25.7%, which is approaching that of silicon solar cells. They show excellent conversion efficiency even in low illumination environments such as in cloudy conditions or during mornings/evenings outside, and with indoor light sources they have demonstrated a conversion efficiency exceeding 30%. With their thin, lightweight features, perovskite solar cells are going to be in high demand in the future for use in almost any location—indoors or outdoors.

Incubation and wet laboratory facilities for development work in Sakyo ward, Kyoto

Our EVER Incubation facility is engaged in promotion activities for student entrepreneurs to encourage them to build up their entrepreneurship and then to lead them into launching their own business ventures. We do this through offering buildings in Kyoto, a place of students and a younger demographic, with our desire to increase the number of young entrepreneurs in Kyoto. In our Wet Lab development business, we have been working toward the realization of Kyoto Bio-city Plan, advocated by Kyoto City in 2002. To combine the medical and engineering worlds in more extensive areas, it is indispensable to have the practical means at hand, such as land, buildings, and a suitable environment in which to work. Our intention is to strongly contribute to the success of the Kyoto Bio-city Plan through real estate, an essential factor to realize it.

Practical implementation of 3 elements plus one in regeneration medicine; from post-covid symptoms and intractable diseases to preemptive medicine

Cell Factor is a venture company originating from Kyoto University. We offer regeneration medicine for bone joints in a day-surgery system including the three elements of regeneration medicine; cells, growth factors, scaffold materials, in addition to surgical devices. As a first step, we will apply our system to overcome the intractable disease of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, which is anticipated to bring a worldwide surge of  tens of millions of patients following the COVID-19 pandemic. We will then promote well-being through safe and secure regenerative medicine to contribute to society. After we accumulate achievements in Japan, including responses to the inbound demands from medical tourism, we aim to out-license our technology to foreign countries.
